Open it on the calculator

  1. Press the prgm key. The PROGRAMMING menu opens.

  2. Press enter to select TI-Basic. The list of TI-Basic programs opens.

  4. Press enter to run it. The program opens on the list of categories it converts.

Convert a value

These steps convert 3.5 kilometers to miles.

  1. Press 1 for Length. The length units open, asking which one you are converting from.

  2. Press 4 for km. The same list of units comes back, this time asking which one to convert to.
  3. Press 8 for mi. The prompt asks for a value in kilometers.

  4. Type 3.5 and press enter. The answer prints as 3.5 km=2.1748 mi.

What it converts

  • Length: mm, cm, m, km, in, ft, yd, mi
  • Mass: mg, g, kg, oz, lb
  • Volume: mL, L, cm³, in³, fl oz, cup, pt, qt, gal
  • Temperature: °C, °F, K
  • Time: sec, min, hr, day, week, year
  • Speed: m/s, km/h, mph, ft/s, knot
  • Area: cm², m², km², in², ft², yd², acre, mi²
  • Pressure: Pa, kPa, atm, bar, mmHg, torr, psi
  • Energy: J, kJ, cal, kcal, Wh, kWh, BTU, eV

Any unit in a category converts to any other unit in that category, in either direction.

Good to know

  • Answers come back at six significant figures. 3.5 km lands on 2.1748 mi rather than a long decimal tail, which is the part of the number you would write down anyway.
  • A year counts as 365 days. That is what the time category divides by, so a year converts to 52.1429 weeks rather than a leap-year-adjusted figure.
  • The converted number is kept in R. Press alpha then R to pull it into your next calculation instead of retyping it.
