TI-84 Evo Jailbreak: Does One Exist Yet?

There is no public jailbreak for the TI-84 Evo. The good news: you can still put games on your calculator, thanks to its built-in Python support.

Why you don't need a jailbreak

Most games for the TI-84 Evo are written in Python, which the Evo runs by default. There is already a large library ready to play, and getting them onto your calculator is far simpler than it was on older models.

Why did older calculators need a jailbreak?

The TI-84 Plus CE launched in 2015 able to run assembly programs, the native code developers used to build fast, full-featured games. A dedicated community grew around it and built up a real library of them.

That changed in 2020. Assembly programs opened the door to bypassing the calculator's exam mode, and with cheating becoming a real concern, Texas Instruments removed assembly support to keep the CE trusted for testing. Since those games were assembly programs, they stopped running too.

Hobbyist developers responded with arTIfiCE, a free tool that used a bug in one of the calculator's built-in apps to switch assembly back on. It became the standard way to get games running again, and it still works on any CE that hasn't updated to TI's newest software, which recently patched the bug.

Will arTIfiCE work on the Evo?

No. arTIfiCE exploited specific bugs in the TI-84 Plus CE's software that Texas Instruments has already fixed. TI built the Evo to be more locked down, and it doesn't share the CE's bugs.

The Evo may get jailbroken one day to enable more advanced games, but don't hold your breath. Jailbreaks come from hobbyists spending hours picking apart TI's software in search of a mistake, which is slow work, and TI has been cracking down hard.
